Welcome to the Shanti Trust website

The Shanti Trust is a small community development organisation based on the shores of Lake Malawi near the town of Chintheche. We work with villages in the historic area of Bandawe to improve access to education, healthy living and the sustainable use of natural resources. More information on the history of the Trust and our aims and objectives is available in the About us section.

Latest news

The late Chief Yakucha with two of our volunteers
  • We are very sad to have to report that Chief Yakucha (left) passed away suddenly in August of 2008. The chief was instrumental in so much of our work and will be greatly missed by the community and all of us working with the trust. His legacy will live on in the huge advances made in the last year.
  • Our latest newsletter from October 2008 is now available.
  • An updated version of our report on our community research on soil erosion and woodland restoration is now available. It has been submitted for publication in a scientific journal and is currently under peer-review.
  • Book appeal - the local school is building a library for the community. If you have any unwanted books you would like to donate please get in touch.

  • Our work currently falls under three main headings, though there is of course a considerable amount of overlap between them. Follow the links for more information on our projects.

    • Education
    • We are helping to support and develop the local school in Bandawe as well as providing education for adults from the local community on subjects such as first aid, hygiene, nutrition and woodland and fire management.
    • Arts and Culture
    • We promote the work of local artists and are developing a community cultural centre and museum.
    • Natural Resources
    • We have instigated a tree-planting and fire management programme and have started research into the causes of and solutions to land degredation.
